Before & After: Open Bite

– Tuesday, March 08, 2016 –

What is an open bite?

An open bite is a type of malocclusion where the top teeth do not overlap the bottom teeth.

What causes an open bite?

Many things can cause an open bite including:

  • Genetics and abnormal growth of the jaws
  • Habits such as finger or thumb sucking
  • Tongue habit (tongue thrust) or lip habit
  • Airway problems

How is an open bite fixed?

Orthodontic treatment is usually required to correct an open bite, which may include braces and additional appliances depending on your specific needs.  If the open bite is caused by a habit such as finger or thumb sucking, treatment will only be successful if the habit is broken.
